eBook Ecstasy

With the June issue, the eBook Ecstasy newsletter went to a bi-monthly format. There was no July/August newsletter due to a lack of epublishing news. September and October 2002 ebook releases with four star reviews have been combined in this issue.

eBook Ecstasy is a free monthly newsletter aimed at introducing readers to great ebooks. In upcoming issues, we plan to include information on worthy ebook news. So, epublishers can feel free to send us their press releases about innovations, authors should send notification of book signings, awards or other achievements and readers should provide feedback as to the features you would like to see added to eBook Ecstasy. This is *your* newsletter.

Using the Toshiba e310 Pocket PC
from a Totally Non Techie's Point of View

Celia A. Leaman

The true test of my new pocket PC, the Toshiba e310, came last week when I went camping. Now it may seem strange, getting away to the backwoods and taking an electronic device along, but I tell you, that baby was just the ticket for reading in the tent at night -- after all, it now gets dark quite early. And I could carry several ebooks with me, taking up no space at all.

I mainly bought the Toshiba because I wanted to read/edit and review ebooks on it. I looked at several devices, but this unit suited me best for this purpose. (Comparable units with similar screen clarity would be the HP Journada and the Sony Clie, but they were more expensive.)

Before I made the purchase, I contacted Toshiba to ask if there would be a portable keyboard available in the future, which there will be. At the moment there is a pop-up keyboard on the unit, which is great for small editing jobs, making notes etc. It also has a drawing and writing mode.

I also wanted a car cigarette lighter adaptor so I could recharge it while on the road. As yet they don't make one, so I bought an adaptor into which I could plug the cradle, and it works fine. (Toshiba delivered it from Toronto -- 3000 miles away -- the very next day after placing my order, free of charge! Now that's what I call service.)

The Toshiba e310 is a colored unit (reflection color TFT, 240x320 pixels, up to 64,000 colors), has a 32 MB SDRAM memory (more memory available using memory sticks). The screen size is 2-1/4 x 3" (2-1/4 by just over 1-1/2" if you are using the pop-up keyboard, but you don't have to have it displayed all the time, so there's plenty of room for text to make it a very comfortable read.)

It is nice and slim, weighs only 5 oz, and comes in a leather case with a hard front to protect the screen. Very convenient for purse or pocket. By the way, from a store that makes magnetic signs, I was able to buy clear plastic screen protector covering at a fraction of the cost of the pre-cut pieces. You have to measure and cut it, but it's worth it, and it works fine.

The e310 came with a USB cable, a cradle and a great little manual, a CD: The Pocket PC Companion. We had a problem getting this unit initialized -- our error -- but Toshiba have a 24/7 help line, and someone was there at 1.30 a.m. eastern time to walk us through the process. This was impressive, the sort of thing that would encourage a person to buy another Toshiba product.

You can connect to the Internet to download email and Internet files, but you can't connect to a phone to retrieve your email. (You can with the more expensive unit.) So you have to weigh up exactly what you want to get out of it before you buy it. This unit is very oriented to calendars or tasks, with an infrared connector, although I don't use those features much. (However, I did use the note feature after discovering how many things I'd forgotten to take with me on the camping trip <grin>.)

It comes with several programs, one of which is Pocket Word. Without any trouble at all, you can download a file into the unit, work on it, and then sync it back into your PC. You will find all the changes are made. You might have to readjust the font type, but that isn't a big deal.

There is a microphone, so you can record on it and the sound reproduction is quite adequate for notes. MP3's sound excellent, just like a CD player.

Jpg images look pretty good on it. This is handy when you have an ebook with illustrations, or want to carry some photos around with you.

Unlike some other units I looked at, there is a scroll button, making it easy to turn pages when reading ebooks. You can also use the larger button at the bottom, or the stylus. You can start the unit using several ways. The main power button also turns on the light. The thing I really like is that you can adjust the screen light for both modes: either on battery or when using the power connection.

This unit is like many others in that it isn't great for reading out of doors, but not bad in the shade. At night it's fabulous though, you can see quite well with the light set on the lowest setting for instance, which saves on battery power. You can also nip into the settings while you are still reading to see how much battery is left, and you can adjust/configure without losing your place. You can also designate the memory of the unit at any given time. For instance, if you use fewer programs, you can allow more for file storage. This is a very useful feature.

There is a prompter that will remind you to check your battery strength, and it comes on way before the battery is low enough to worry about it. You can adjust those settings if you want to. The battery is an Advanced Lithium Ion. On the back of the unit is a reset point that will reboot the unit without losing any of your files. (I've confused it more than once and had to do this!)

You may pay less for other units (this one was $599 Cdn, plus tax), but they might have a slower processor and not such a good screen. I think, comparing them all, this one has a lot of user-friendly details packed into it, and a lot of thought has gone into its production.

All in all, this is a fabulous little unit, and for the amount of work I've done on it already I'd say it's worth every penny. I'm really delighted with it so far -- still learning to use it, as there are many features I haven't yet accessed. For me it's an ongoing learning experience, but meanwhile it does the tasks for which I bought it.

Postscript: It is worth checking with your credit card company. Mine doubled the manufacturer's warranty because I used my card to make the purchase.

(2) BEHIND THE SCENES

Never, Ever Release Any Of Your Rights To Anyone

Bob McElwain

One of the grandest scams on the Web, which goes largely unnoticed, is for a web-based bookseller or publisher to require some rights to your work in exchange for the service to be provided. Many demand the electronic rights, for example.

    Don't do it!

Never, ever release any of your rights. Here's why.

The Writer's Goal

Winning the writing game means becoming an established author, one who sells a new book every year or two. One who earns enough to live comfortably from his or her writing alone.

The first step toward achieving this goal is to be published by a major house in the real world. That is, offline. Most will not even consider your book if you've muddied the water by releasing or selling any rights to it.

Sure, there are exceptions. Some have self-published, then later made a deal with a major house. And the stories make grand reading. But there are not a lot of them.

The Better Plan

If you are serious about writing, grab a copy of "Writer's Market," then read and follow the rules. While many publishers buy an occasional manuscript directly from an author, your best bet is to find an agent and leave the manner of presentation to publishers in capable hands. (An agent is worth his or her weight in gold in helping you decipher a contract!)

It will probably take some time to find an agent. Begin another tale while doing so. And once you find one, while waiting further and hoping for great news, continue writing. If the agent you found can't make it happen, look for another. But keep writing.

Again, there are success stories of those who bypassed agents and went directly to a publisher. But unless you're one heck of a salesperson and really in tune with what each publisher is looking for, leave it all to an agent, and do what you do best. Namely, write.

How Rights Released Can Bite

Bingo. You've made a sale. A good house, too. You and your agent are jumping with joy. Hey, you're on your way!

But wait one. A few years back, electronic rights were negotiable, and often retained by the author. So you released these rights, or part of them, to gain some exposure on the Web. But now your publisher-to-be wants them. What for?

Books by major authors are selling in electronic formats. The entire publishing industry is closely tuned in to this rapidly changing part of the book arena.

Okay, back to the what your publisher-to-be wants. Will they go through the legal hassles and pay the costs to recover those rights you handed out? Or will they just grab another title from the in-stack? If you were in their position, what would you do?

The bottom line? You have just lost a shot at the big time. You get to start over with a new book. And you'll probably have to hunt up another agent as well.

Why Risk it?

Don't sell or release any of your rights to any of your work until absolutely convinced it is not salable to a major print publisher. Then, and only then, should you consider taking it to the Web and seeing what you can make happen.

A Case In Point

I finished "They Who Betray" (available at Actiontales.com) in late 1991. I gave up trying to sell it in 1994. Even earlier, it was obvious major houses were no longer interested in this kind of tale. The manuscript has been dozing on various computer disks ever since.

While I'd love to have sold it to Pocket Book, I wasn't able to. So off to the Web I have gone. I'm excited about the possibilities. While fame and glory is unlikely to be obtained, lots of people will find they like the tale. And that will be a win for me, any way you look at it.

But I would never have made this move had I believed there was even a chance of selling it to a major house. If you're serious about your writing career, you'll follow the same path. Head for the Web as the last resort, never as the starting point.

One Exception

All who climb a mountain do not hunger to become a noted mountaineer. And all who write a book, do not yearn to be an established author. So if you wrote a book for the fun of it, and now want to share it with family and friends, jump right into the Web bit.

Check out services available or self-publish on your own. Either way, go for it.

Play By The Rules

But if you're serious about writing and dream of becoming an established author, take the conservative, conventional route. This gives you the greatest opportunity for success.

Yes, I know. The competition is fierce. But there's a bit of this on the Web as well. The last numbers I saw suggest there are over 100,000 titles available on the Internet.

To sell effectively through any website, you'll need a heck of a book. Then you'll have to somehow find your way beyond all those "Buy-Me!" pleas associated with each and every one of those 100,000+ titles.

Can it be done? Sure. But it's not easy. Certainly it's not easier than gaining the confidence of an agent who can sell your work to a major publishing house.

Title: Dancing with the Devil
Author: Patricia Crossley
http://www.patriciacrossley.com/
Atlantic Bridge Publishing
http://www.atlanticbridge.net/
ISBN: 1-931761-50-7
Genre: Romantic suspense

Assigned to a story in the wilds of Africa Reporter, Jazz Hargrove struggles against raging sandstorms, blistering heat and her own dark demons, but they are nothing compared to the nightmare awaiting her when she returns home to Victoria to settle her father's estate. Within hours of her arrival a mysterious stalker, a shadowy figure from her past, centers her in the crosshairs of his sinister desire. It starts with a single rose placed on her table, a hang-up phone call, then progresses to a series of break-ins and escalating terror.

Meanwhile, photographer Pete Browning, an ex-cop with a failed marriage and a past battle with the bottle, finds himself falling for Jazz, but can she break down the barriers she has built around her heart and trust him enough to let him close? Will the stalker let her?

Dancing With the Devil word-weaves suspense and romance into an intricate tapestry of terror and desire. The African settings ring as true as the Canadian backdrop. The relationship between the two leads builds at just the right pace, with none of the plot contrivance or awkwardness sometimes found in lesser novels. Jazz and Pete are well-defined and realistic, emotions and intimacy occurring naturally between them.

Ms. Crossely's prose is top notch and the author's use of mirroring and circular story technique creates a three-dimensional tale of love, conflict and blood-chilling suspense. Highly recommended.

Genre: YA Fantasy

Winner of the WordWeaving Award for Excellence

Eleven-year-old Marina once knew a sea witch who lived in a large houseboat in a private lagoon. Their friendship brings about imaginative happenings, leaving the reader uncertain how much truly happens and how much is the result of Marina's vivid imaginings. Perhaps the lady Marina believes to a mermaid is simply an enigmatic woman recovering from tragedy. Or perhaps she is truly a child of the sea.

Author Wendy Maree Peterson pens an entrancing young adult fantasy in The Tail of the Sea Witch. Peterson maintains a dream like narrative quality that creates a mystical world where the impossible becomes quite logical. In this world of opposites where dreams and reality merge as one, readers will find the beauty of legendary places and extraordinary creatures. Peterson's rich narrative style, replete with magical imagery and extraordinary vision, brings this story vividly alive.
While the stated audience is young adults, readers of all ages will treasure this stunning tale. An extraordinary creation, of which readers will hope for sequels, The Tail of the Sea Witch earns the WordWeaving Award for Excellence.

Title: The Winnowed Woman
Author: Celia A. Leaman
http://www.devonshirebabe.com
Twilight Times Books
http://www.twilighttimesbooks.com
Genre: Non-fiction

The Winnowed Woman is a true gem! It is a journey through a personal labyrinth of emotional and physical trials that bring about a deeper sense and understanding of life and the universe.

The Winnowed Woman is about a woman facing crises, losing love, rekindling it, losing it again then embracing temporary solitude. It is about one woman's struggle to find herself after years of reliance. It is about pain, fear, hope and the eventual acceptance of loss. But mostly it is about discovery; the discovery of that integral aspect begging for release in each and every one of us: spirituality.

Ms. Leaman has masterfully presented this journey into spiritual awakening. Using a combination of essay, poetry and journaling, the story flows so smoothly that I found it impossible to put down. The author's insight is uncanny, and her word pictures truly stunning.

If you have ever experienced heartache or pain and would like to experience hope, The Winnowed Woman is a book you should not miss!

Title: Weary of the Dance
Author: Ana Salazar
Novel Books Inc
http://www.novelbooksinc.com/
Genre: Regency

Weary of the Dance is an emotional, character-driven story of two complex, damaged people whose lives have been totally different from each other's. Sinjin has secrets, not only dark ones about his past, but even about his  family background. Philomina has no experience with human closeness, therefore no expectation of love, yet she's an intelligent woman whose fairness allows her to keep trust in Sinjin, though her faith is sorely tried.

The required consummation of the marriage occurs in the early pages, but that doesn't mean the sexual tension relaxes, far from it. Sinjin and Philomina live together in an intimacy short of completion as they learn about each other and themselves. We see their passions strain to be released and the changes each goes through. Sinjin harbors much guilt, but wasn't he as much the betrayed as the betrayer? For him, Barleythrush Court is the salvation of his soul. For Philomina, Sinjin is the means for hers to blossom. I found myself completely caught up in Sinjin and Philomina's relationship and life at Barleythrush Court. The thoughtful plot, the conflicts, and the well-developed characters already make a good story. Add in some touching scenes and wonderful dialogue—Sinjin often rises to eloquence—and you have a very fine novel.

Weary of the Dance follows The Last Light in Ms. Salazar's Hearts Afire series. While I chase down and purchase Sinjin's brother Damien's book, I strongly recommend Weary of the Dance.
