Outlining Made Easy

Joyce and Jim Lavene

Most writers hate outlining. Some are terrified of it. Non-fiction writers are used to it as a necessity. Fiction writers stay as far away as they can. But outlining can be the fiction writer’s best friend, especially the fiction novel writer.

Outlining accomplishes 3 very important functions:

·       Takes the writer from the brainstorming aspect of creating the novel to putting the ideas in a logical order.

·       Gives the writer a chance to take a step back and get an overview of a large piece of work.

·       Helps focus your creativity on your writing because you already know where you’re going.

Outlining prevents getting lost or repeating your ideas. When you see the order of your work in front of you in an outline, you can change sequence before you begin to write, helping to prevent rewrites or revisions.

Some writers believe that you can’t be creative without keeping your ideas close to you, not writing them down or discussing them before you begin the novel. These are seat-of-your pants writers who would rather be boiled in oil than create an outline. That’s fine until you get to chapter 17 and suddenly your plot is not where it should be and you’re writing the same ideas that you wrote in chapter 3. And what about that sagging middle?

Most professional writers have to be able to discuss their storylines with editors and agents. They don’t have the luxury of being silently creative or keeping their plot a secret before they write it. Every writer should be able to detail their ideas for a novel in an outline or synopsis as well as minimize them into a single sentence. It’s just what writers do at one time or another in their professional career.

Let’s throw away the old notions about outlining that we learned in school. Your outline only needs to be what you need to express your ideas for each chapter of your book.

·       An outline doesn’t have to have Roman numerals.

·       It doesn’t have to be broken down into subsections. Or complete sentences.

·       It doesn’t have any rules that you don’t give it. This isn’t a 6th grade English assignment!

·       It isn’t engraved in stone. Your outline should be expansive, creative and flexible. Think of it as a travel guide to where you’re going-not an inescapable prison barge.

If you can’t write a page that basically describes what you want to happen in each chapter, write a paragraph. If you can’t write a paragraph, write a sentence or two. You can always go back and fill in as you discover more about your work.

Your outline can:

·       Define your beginning and end.

·       Place character changes

·       Show shifts in time and place within the story.

Okay! You're ready to outline!

Writing Historical Fiction

John Gorman

In writing historical fiction, the most important element can be summed up in one word: authenticity.

Obviously, the history in your novel must accord with the known facts of the time, especially when real persons and events play a prominent role. Straying from this base turns the work into fantasy, not an inferior genre, but something quite different. Not letting your readers know at the start which genre they are dealing with can severely impede that "suspension of disbelief" needed to keep them reading.

e.g. A current e-novel deals with Hitler's efforts to do away with President Roosevelt, because the dictator feared his interference with the "final solution" for the Jews.  Actually, Franklin Roosevelt did nothing to hinder the Holocaust, although its horrors were well known to the American government. A reader aware of these facts would find this book tough going, no matter how well it was written.

The second area in which authenticity is crucial is details. Get a few important ones badly wrong, and you've lost your readers forever. To help ward off these errors, there is a series of books from Writer's Digest, entitled Daily Life in _________. From these, it is possible to find out when various inventions came on the scene, and how long it took them to become part of people's routine. You can learn how dangerous it actually was to go from one side of London to another in 1686. What kinds of crime and punishment were the order of the day? Where were pirates operating, and what were their tactics and goals? How did someone become a pirate anyway?

Obviously, there is no need to make yourself an expert in the period or to master much more that an few convincing and accurate details within a well researched historical context.

Sometimes, however, you may have to deal with a time for which there are few sources, and even they are doubtful.

For Part One of my own King of the Romans, the sole original sources were a paragraph in Gregory of Tours, the official historian of the Franks, writing a century after the events of my novel had taken place, and some letters from Bishop Sidonius to a man who may have been the hero of my novel. For the second half, I relied upon contemporary historians to give me an idea of the laws, customs and usages of the time. Individual characters and events, however, were my own invention.

Many cultures have left us no written records, and what we know of them comes mostly from ancient ruins and burial sites. Here, you try to learn enough from archaeology to avoid obvious "howlers," like having a Mayan princess ride off in a carriage or letting a tribe of Neanderthals be chased by dinosaurs.

Emotional authenticity is by far the the most difficult, as we try to project ourselves backward into the minds and hearts of our characters. Historical accounts tell us how people acted, but they rarely give us much insight into how they felt. For that information, it is best to turn to the fiction of the time. e.g. Virgil's Aeneid is hardly reliable as a historical account of the founding of Rome, but it is an excellent source for how Romans believed they should feel about these events in the past, and how they should conduct themselves in the present.

Jane Austen's novels are far more the emotional history of her characters than they are of the great events of the time, which are barely mentioned. Anyone writing about that period would be hard pressed to find a better guide to how people in the early 19th Century British upper middle class felt about themselves and each other. For the middle of that century, Charles Dickens is enormously helpful, as are Henry James and Edith Wharton for the turn of the Twentieth, etc. Even bad literature can tell us much about people's emotional lives.

As we come nearer to our own time, magazines and newspapers open a window onto the day-to-day backdrop of people's lives and, by inference at least, their attitude toward those lives. e.g. What magazines were "ladies" supposed to read? What lessons were they expected to learn from them? What stories were regarded as suitable for growing boys? Who were the characters to be imitated or shunned?

No matter how much we study, however, we are always looking backward though our own eyes from our own lives, the only ones we can really know. But this knowledge can protect us from allowing wishful thinking to make our characters think and act in ways that were not just unusual, but literally inconceivable, in their day.

No amount of research, however, is a substitute for good writing, for interesting, plausible stories of people we care about. Writers owe it to their readers not to put obstacles in their path, not to trip them up with historical blunders that shatter the
pleasant illusion of living through dramatic events in another time and another place, far away.

(1) FEATURED E-PUBLISHER

Terry R.L. Williams, Publisher of Electric eBook Publishing

eBe:  Why did you get started as an ebook publisher?

We started epublishing because we saw fewer and fewer authors being able to break into the traditional print market. Publishing has become overwhelmed by the explosion of internet access to information. The end result is more people are writing than ever before, but these same writers aren't able to get their books to market due to limitations of entering the marketplace.

We thought that by creating a process that allowed authors to get into the marketplace, the quality of their work could be exposed to the world. In our process, we eliminate the technical difficulties of the author's work and assist in marketing through both traditional methods and the Internet.

eBe:  Do epublishers currently have a reputation for producing quality novels?

Epublishing, like their traditional counterparts, have strong publishers and weak publishers. The quality of the book, from a technical merit standpoint, is no better or worse than in the traditional model of publishing. The process is identical, except that an ebook is printed to an electronic media (disk, CD, hard drive) rather than a paper media. Electric eBook Publishing strives to create quality novels.

eBe: What will you do to earn a good reputation for your company?

Reputation is a very subjective thing. It totally depends on the perception of competence whether it be true or false. Part of the process we go through is careful reading of talent and content in each submission. When we find a mix we feel is marketable, we issue a contract with the author to produce the book. What we find is, regardless of talent, much of the marketability of the book depends on the amount of time the author and the publisher spend in promoting the book to targeted readers. Marketability = sales = reputation.

eBe:  What changes, good or bad, have you recently seen in the epublishing industry?

There have been both good and bad changes. Of the good changes, the most notable is the slowly growing acceptance in certain areas of ebooks. These areas include education, science, technical journals, and data intensive non-fiction.

The difficulty is that many new epublishers get into the business expecting a fast take-up by the public centred around the fiction market. The fiction market is the most difficult market to break into. As a result, there is a high failure rate among epublishers. This is similar to traditional publishing.

One of the key issues still evolving around this business is the standardization of a programming language that allows a functional general ebook reader to access the many different demands of electronic publishing. These include hypertext links, video, audio, and numerous other interactive aspects.

There is also a great deal of controversy around encryption and protection of ebook files. The higher the level of protection, the fewer devices able to access it. This creates a distribution nightmare. If half the money spent by publishers on encryption was spent on marketing, more authors and publishers would be profitable.

eBe:  What do you have to offer that perhaps traditional (print) publishers do not?

Speed to market, ease of access, updatability of materials, interactivity, and lower market entry costs. The author perceptions around this are still in the formative stages though, and as a result many of the books being written are not utilizing the capabilities that make epublishing unique.

eBe:  What genres do you offer?

We presently offer fiction, non-fiction, inspirational, and interactive children's books. However, our focus is changing toward educational materials which will enable young people to learn how to utilize the benefits of the web while learning to read.

eBe:  What do you see as the future of ebooks?

As the cost of readers decreases, and the industry standardizes its format requirements (still probably a five year task), ebook acceptance into schools and businesses will increase. As this shift occurs, there will be larger take-up by the reading consumer.

This industry is still in the educational phase--it is teaching the general public that it exists and provides benefits that traditional books do not. As this task progresses, ebooks will become more widely accepted. Once this happens, they will be treated the same as print books. The pocketbook industry went through the same process 50 years ago. Ebooks will follow a similar path.

About the publisher:

Electric eBook Publishing is a two-year-old epublishing company. They have released over 20 books, have nearly a two year schedule of books to be released, and receive over five hundred submissions a month, from which they accept one to two.

They were recently recognized by the International eBook Award foundation as a finalist in the Frankfurt eBook Awards, a first in the independent epublishers. Terry Williams says, "While we are proud of this accomplishment, we are constantly trying to improve our author's experience in publishing. As a result, we are soon to be partnering with a new company doing short-run printing and distribution to Canadian book sellers. Our hope in this process is to allow more authors to take their books from Thought to Print to Market."

Fantasy romance

Stunning! Very highly recommended

Frightening dreams haunt Diana Plaas' sleep as she helplessly watches terrifying imagery unfold. Diana sees a man covered in blood lays on an altar, and a woman thrown across him and brutally sexually used by a tattooed High Priest. She tries to persuade herself that her dreams are not precognitive in nature; just as she wants to believe that her previous dreams of a plane crash did not foretell death for her husband and his father. Certainly Diana does not suspect that her new neighbor moves in next door to protect her and to complete his first assignment as a Wizard.

Win Sayre's first assignment as a Wizard. Sworn to uphold the balance, Win must protect Diana from the vicious evil that comes for her. He does not understand the powerful physical attraction he feels toward Diana nor the bonds that will bind them. Certainly Diana looks nothing like the women that usually draw him into their beds. Nevertheless, Diana possesses both magickal skill and physical attraction that neither she nor Win yet suspect. But it will take all of Win's skills and Diana's blossoming abilities to protect her from Shiva, the nightmarish Priest who stalks her dreams.

Author Mary Taffs brings a powerful understanding of the metaphysics of magick to her fascinatingly created MAGICK. Taffs utilizes traditional magickal elements and paranormal skills, with strong ethical considerations, as the foundation for her own unique mythology. While readers may traditionally associate human sacrifice with devil worship, Taffs puts an interesting spin on the narrative by making this a battle between two forms of matriarchal energy. Vividly realized characterizations and events come alive with Taffs' deft pen, as nightmarish imagery, strong character motivation, and a fast paced plot result in a stunning read. In addition, readers will be pleased to learn that the delightful Mr. Bill, the feline who owns Dee, is based on Taffs' own pet. Very highly recommended.

Futuristic  romance

The coalition-Triad war is over and now the former enemies are allies against the Illithians who want to rule the universe. Former coalition captain Tasha "Sass" Sebastian commands the spaceship Vaxxar, second in power to Triad Admiral Kel-Paten, who is part human and part cyborg. Sass doesn't know it but Kel-Paten, who isn't supposed to have any feelings, is in love with her.

Pirate Jace Serafino, a renegade telepath, is beamed aboard the Vaxxar when his ship is destroyed in a space war. He is a wanted man in the alliance because he was coerced into working as an undercover agent for them in their war against the Illithians but disappeared before he could deliver anything really useful to them. Jace has let himself become caught by his enemies because he has knowledge of a plot by the Illithians to conquer by stealth what they could not take by force. Now he has to convince his most deadly enemy the Admiral that he is telling the truth and he needs Sass's help to do it. Then they must try to stop the intrigue before they are killed because both Sass and her admiral are marked for assassination.

COMMAND PERFORMANCE is a space opera in the tradition of Star Trek and Star Wars, complete with romantic heroes, dashing rogues, evil aliens and adorable space pets called furzels. The protagonists of this novel are well drawn and easily engage reader interest and empathy even as the plot races at hyperspeed. Linnea Sinclair raises the bar of excellence in science fiction romance several notches.
