eBook Ecstasy

eBook Ecstasy is a free monthly newsletter aimed at introducing readers to great ebooks. In upcoming issues, we plan to include information on worthy ebook news. So, epublishers can feel free to send us their press releases about innovations, authors should send notification of book signings, awards or other achievements and readers should provide feedback as to the features you would like to see added to eBook Ecstasy. This is *your* newsletter.

This month our Spotlight is on Lionhearted Publishing, Inc. who is releasing several new romance novels from now through this Summer. Many titles will be of special fun for Regency readers-- after eight years of publishing romance, these are their first Regency releases

Our articles this month include "How to sell your ebooks on the net" by Lida E. Quillen, "E-books At The Airport?" by Dorothy Thompson and "Taming the Book Review Monster" by Su Kopil.

You'll find book reviews of notable new releases such as Alaric Swifthand by Steve Lazarowitz, The Moon Child by Alex Roces, The Sex Gates by Darrell Bain and Jeanine Berry and Whisper My Name by Tara Manderino.

A special thanks to all the authors who contributed info on their new book releases and/or their accomplishments. Each month for the past year, the editor of eBook Ecstasy spent dozens of hours scrounging publishers' web sites for new releases and pleading for press releases. Authors and publishers heeded our recent call for submissions and lots of interesting news has trickled in over the past couple of weeks. Because of *your* input, this is one of the best issues to date.

Please consider supporting epublishing endeavors and worthy authors by purchasing the listed books. Most of the ebooks mentioned in this newsletter have received four star reviews.

Or feel free to simply make a "donation to the cause" via the Amazon.com Honor system or PayPal -- either to your favorite epublisher, and/or this newsletter. With our twenty-ninth issue currently online, this labor of love needs to start bringing in revenue in order to remain a viable endeavor.

E-books At The Airport?

Dorothy Thompson

It is raining cats, dogs, and maybe an elephant or two, and your plane is due to take off from the runway in an hour. You battle the elements, nearly risking your life, arrive five minutes before take-off, when you are confronted by the friendly reservation clerk shaking her head.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Thompson, but there is a five-hour delay.  It is much too risky for any of our planes to take off in this inclement weather.  I'm sure it is in your best interest to take a seat and wait until it clears.  When the weather lets up, we will let you know."

"When the weather lets up?" you say.  You want to choke the friendly reservation clerk for being so cheerful.  You panic.  This could be hours, days, months!  This is monsoon season!

The kind reservation desk clerk sympathizes.  After all, she’s in there for the long haul, also.

"Why don't you try our latest e-book selection from Stephen King?" she asks me.

She guides me to an e-book vending machine that holds all the latest e-books from Stephen King to Winnie-the-Pooh.  Ah…so many selections, you take two.  You whip out your hand-held e-book reading device, insert one of the discs, and breathe a sigh a relief.

You settle back and read the hours away.

No, this isn't a scene from Futuristic Americana. This is real life and will be happening in airports all over the world.

E-books and Hand-held Reading Devices

It is the beginning of a whole new age for literature.  E-books are becoming more and more accepted as a means of reading the latest novels, self-help books, and even children’s books.  With the age of technology fast upon us, hand-held devices such as the Palm Pilot®  are making their way into the everyday household.  No more carrying heavy books around. Just pop your Palm Pilot, or other hand-held reading device into your pocketbook, briefcase, or knap-sack, and go to the beach, the gym, or even the dentist and enjoy the e-book experience.

Besides being eco-friendly (no trees are destroyed), the Palm Pilot is flexible, thus allowing you to take it anywhere.  Even though they have small screens, which may not suit everyone, they are unbeatable on price.  Their multitude of uses includes a contact book, memo pad, and even a journal.

One of the newer pocket readers that have come out on the market today is the REB 1200.  This innovative e-reader touts a full-color reading screen with two built-in modem ports – one for a standard phone line and one for a broadband connection so you can get your e-books loaded in seconds.   Another feature of the REB 1200 is the addition of a backlit screen enabling you to read in the dark and not disturb your sleeping mate.  This model is higher than the Palm Pilot, but certainly worth the investment.

E-book Vending Machines

Australia has been the first country to jump on the e-book bandwagon with their e-book vending machines debuting in airports.  W.H. Smith has tested these machines there with great success.  Because of the positive feedback from airport patrons there in Australia, he will soon be installing “Zoom Systems e-Book Stores” throughout the country.  These machines can house up to 25 fiction and nonfiction bestseller titles, and can be purchased directly from the machine.  What makes these machines so unique and customer-friendly is the fact that they allow visitors to pay at the machine instead of entering the store, allowing travelers to buy e-books at any hour of the day.  The merchandising, sales representation, and inventory are all handled from the desktop via the internet.

This is fantastic news for the e-book industry, a novel idea that is catching on by the storm.  I can assure you traditional print books are here to stay, but the e-book generation is about to take over in your household, in schools, and even at your local airports.  The computer age goes one step forward with the advent of the e-book and its’ reading devices. Although the price of the Palm Pilot, for instance, is out of some of today’s household budgets, it is expected to drop in a few years to allow even the most frugal consumer to be able to read an e-book anytime, anywhere.

POD Vending Machines, too?

The e-book industry is not the only one to come up with this idea of being able to provide the consumer with instant books. The POD industry has jumped on the “instant book” vending machine bandwagon along, also, by introducing its’ first POD book ever to emerge from a fully automated vending machine.  On July 9, 2001, Jeff Marsh of Marsh Technologies and Peter Zelchenko of Volume One from Chesterfield, Missouri, had the first POD book to slide out of a chute on their prototype MTI Perfect Book-080 in Marsh’s office.  They predict their ATM-like POD machines will be in a variety of stores in the near future.  The price of each one of these machines?  A whopping $100,000.  Even at this steep price, the makers believe it will be beneficial to the book industry as it will solve their inventory storage and low-volume title preservation problems that have plagued them for years.

Conclusion

So what does this mean for the “average joe” consumer?  No more waiting in lines at a busy book-store, the availability of buying their favorite books, any time of the day or night, and no more sitting around a crowded airport for nothing to keep you occupied but month-old periodicals.

So as the rain is pouring down outside in buckets and you are deeply engrossed in the latest Danielle Steele e-book, think of your poor, unfortunate ancestors as they waited for the next wagon train to come along with nothing but a crumpled, soggy newspaper to whittle away the hours.

Taming the Book Review Monster

Su Kopil

Whether you love them or hate them, book reviews are a fact of life in the publishing world.  Readers subscribe to such magazines as ROMANTIC TIMES or online sites like SCRIBES WORLD to find out what's new, what's hot, and to create their monthly buying list.  Yet, many authors miss the opportunity to promote their titles because of a lack of information, a missed deadline, or plain laziness.

Don't be one of them.

Tame the book review monster by getting organized right now.  You'll save time, sweat, and tears.  Less stress means you can concentrate on the next book, on family, on life.

CREATE A CONTACT LIST:  When your book has been accepted for publication, you'll be ahead of the game if your have your contact listed already established.  Create a database or keep a notebook of all magazines, websites, and newspapers that could possibly be interested in reviewing your book.  Start by doing a search for review sites at one of the popular search engines such as www.google.com .  Ask fellow authors for review references.  Check in the pages of books similar to yours.  See if your local newspapers publish reviews.  You can also surf author websites. Some sites, like www.earthlycharms.com has a reference page of review sites which can make your compiling easier.

Be sure and save all pertinent information.  Site/Magazine Name, URL, Address, Email, Contact Person, Review Guidelines -- what format should the ARC be, how do they want it sent, how far in advance do they want it. Recording all the information now, will save you lots of time later.  Your list should always be evolving.  Magazines/websites go out of business or change addresses.  Keep your list updated and always be on the lookout for new places.

ARC'S:  Advance Review Copy or Advanced Reader Copy.  Sometimes your publisher will provide these for you.  Most small presses, however, leave it up to the author to handle this.  I have made my own ARC's with a printer and binder.  It's relatively easy and cheap.  Other authors have had them made at print shops or other places.  How you handle this step is up to you.  Just make sure your ARC is easy to read and looks professional.  For more on ARC's read Vicki Hinze's article, The ABC's of ARC's at
http://www.scribesworld.com/writersniche/articles/arc_abcs.html

SUBMISSION TRACKER:  You've checked your contact list, made your ARC's, and popped them in the mail, but did you make a note of what is going to whom, when, and where?  Just like you keep track of your story submissions - you do keep track of your story submissions, right - you want to know at a glance where your ARC's are.  A simple submission tracker will keep you from tearing your hair out.  I've used an online version but found I'm more apt to maintain a hardcopy version.  Do whichever works best for you or do both.  I've created a sample Submission Tracker at
http://www.earthlycharms.com/free_article_17a.htm.
Feel free to print it out and adjust it to your own needs.

FOLLOW UP:  Keep a box of Thank You notes on hand.  When you finally receive your review you will want to thank the reviewer.  You may have to contact them through an editor or site owner but do make an effort to thank them for their time.  If it's a good review, hopefully, you can forge a relationship with the reviewer.   Ask if you can send her your next book.  Let the reviewer know if you use her quote on your website or in an advertisement.  Most reviewers appreciate seeing their name in print.

USING REVIEWS:  The reviews are rolling in.  Suddenly you have lots of great quotes but what do you do with them?  Many authors spread the news of good reviews via listservs.  If you do this, be sure you have permission to reprint the review.  Add stellar quotes to your website, include them in ads for your books, use them on promotional items.  Create a review booklet to take to booksignings.  Showcase a particularly flattering review in a plastic stand at your signing table.  Send the good reviews to your editor.  Include them in your newsletter.  The promotional possibilities are endless.

A little organization goes a long way when it comes time to have your book reviewed.  Even if you are not yet published, preparing for the day you will be reinforces your dream.  Tame the monster, relieve the stress, and get to work on that next book.

Highly recommended

In ALARIC SWIFTHAND by Steve Lazarowitz, Alaric Mason becomes fantasy's answer to the Wild West with fantastic stories of impossible feats and adventure. His escapades bring to mind James Fenimore Cooper's extraordinary hero Hawk Eye, with a modern twist guaranteed to provide excellent entertainment.

Lazarowitz links the adventures of his hero into three books, the first telling of Alaric's love for Theona, the daughter of a baron. Since Alaric is a simple palace guard, he scarily bears notice in Theona's world. But when he saw Theona through her back and laugh with complete abandon, Alaric fell in love with her lust for life. Intrigued by the opportunity to spend time with a guard, Theona was fascinated with Alaric simply because he was new and different. As the daughter of a noble, Theona's relationship with Alaric had to be kept secret.

When their affair is discovered, Alaric finds himself banished from Modron. He must accompany the King's tax collector to the City of Broken Swords, protect him from harm and deliver him safely back to the palace. Until the taxes are paid in full, he cannot return to Modron. Taking on terrific risk to life and limb, Alaric scales Theona's wall in attempt to persuade her to accompany him out of the city, promising, ""What difference, as long as we're together? There's a whole world out there, waiting to be explored."

They arrange to meet in a tool shed, but as the door slowly closes, Alaric sees Theona lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Before he can seek help, the Baron discovers him there holding the knife that slit Theona's throat. Alaric flees, vowing to clear himself of the blame for the foul murder. Along the way he discovers a magical sword and answers beyond his imagining.

In the successive books, Alaric continues to expound upon his fantastic adventures, creating a world of happenstance and imagination that will delight the reader. Over time Alaric comes to be known by the name of Swifthand, although he admits, "I am still amazed at the implication of the label, for I can never see it when I look at myself in the mirror."

Readers of fantasy and adventure, take note. Steve Lazarowitz has a flair for adventure and the irreverent resulting in an original tale with a powerfully original voice. ALARIC SWIFTHAND was a finalist in the Dream Realms award contest. I highly recommend it!

The Witch of the Winds, Lucila, finds the infant Maria beneath a baleete tree. With no father or mother, Maria is a child of the forest. The people of the local barrio believe her to be enchanted and not born of earthly flesh, greatly distrusting that which they do not understand. Lucila believes the child to be a gift of the Divine Mother, and raises the babe as her own, early recognizing and nurturing the child's gifts. Maria learns Lucila's healing gifts in addition to her own gift of moonpower.

Unlike his fellow villagers who either display unbridled jealousy or insatiable lust toward Maria, Barrio Captain Arturo brings her gifts and the sincerity of his heart. Although the people he leads may hate and curse Maria, Arturo loves Maria as she deserves to be loved. He vows to have her as his wife, gently pursuing Maria despite the fact that she discourages him. Just as he wins Maria's love, however, another man comes that offers a gift of mystery and magic.

Juanito, Charmer of the Groves, seeks the woman who can complete his soul. He vows to win Maria although she is pledged to another. With a gift of music he captivates the women of the barrio, leading them into great danger. Only Maria tries to resist his power. He cares nothing for the harm and death he inflicts, only focusing on his desire. In addition, the people of the barrio still bear the curse of Maya, a woman who violated the sanctity of the laws that preserve the order and morality of the barrio. Between Juanito and the curse, the people of the barrio are in great danger.

Alex Roces creates a remarkable literary work rich in mythos and spirituality in MOON CHILD. Like Michiavelli's THE PRINCE, MOON CHILD becomes a treatise on the truth about power, revealing the difference between perceptions of one who holds power, and the truth of their nature. Like THE CELESTINE PROPHESY, however, Roces also inspires improvement, growth, and honesty, in addition to examining the nature of truth and love. Specifically, Maria is misunderstood and underestimated. With a sincere heart full of love, she stands misjudged by the very people who need her most because they fear her power.

With these complex layers concealed beneath the deceptively simplistic narrative, MOON CHILD reads like a fairy tale. Yet tales within the tale reveal observations and teachings rich in meaning, as Roces brings a rich understanding of psychology and metaphysics to the narrative. As a result, MOON CHILD achieves a complexity that will hold its readers mesmerized. With an enthralling voice as lovely as the music that holds Juanito's listeners entranced, MOON CHILD comes very highly recommended.

Justin Drake, the Seventh Earl of Ashton, knows its time to set up his nursery, but cannot seem to find the right woman. Besides, family life will dictate a change in career, as his boss does not care to send family men into the field. Justin worries over a missing operative and close friend, Roger. His stifles his first impulse, to go after Roger in France himself, knowing that if he were caught it would be the same as signing Roger's death. While attending a soiree, however, he unexpected discovers Roger's sister. He never knew his friend has a sister, especially one so enchanting. But soon Justin finds himself questioning her loyalties and motives as his investigation leads him to a nest of smugglers.

Roger has told his sister Lucia to seek out Justin if she ever needed assistance in his absence. She has come to Town only to find answers to her brother's disappearance. Deaf since she was twelve, Lucia believes herself to be lacking in social graces, but she is quite proficient in lip reading. Cruel comments have led her to believe that her voice is most unpleasant, however, so Lucia rarely communicates with strangers. As neighboring suitors push for marriage, threatening to lock her in Bedlam after securing her fortune, and her brother disappears, Lucia finds herself turning to Justin for help. But his distrust and his desire throw her into quite a quandary as their relationship grows increasingly complicated.

Author Tara Manderino pushes the envelope of the Regency romance, breathing a memorable freshness into this traditional bound genre. Specifically, the choice to make the heroine deaf makes a profound statement for readers who read between the lines. All too often the feminine historical counterparts of this beloved genre were actually silenced because of their sex. They were second-class citizens frequently treated as unintelligent and left in the silent margins of society by patriarchal society. Consequently, the spunky heroine Lucia becomes a kind of Everywoman, and her success becomes additionally admirable in the eyes of savvy readers. The hero's ability to look beyond the obvious limitations to Lucia as a desirable woman of wit and ability juxtaposes his inability to trust her, making the conflict believable. Remarkably, Lucia puts limitations on her abilities and her worth, but Justin never does. WHISPER MY NAME comes very highly recommended.

A group of friends are walking on their college campus in Houston when one of the mysterious gates appears in their path. The gates all appear at the same time all over the Earth from who knows where. Don, Russell, Rita, and Lee have been friends for years and the gate is about to change their lives as well as those of everyone else on Earth.

The first time you go through the gate you come out the other the opposite sex from what you went in as. Don is in the lead and falls through and comes out the other side a changed person. There are various things that also happen when people go through the gate. Criminals don’t always come out, the old become young, but if you try to go through a second time, you don’t come out. As the story progresses, the love of Lee and Rita is tested and sealed even when their roles and sexes are changed. There is also the new religion, The Church of the Gates, the rebirth of the space program, and plenty of government suspicion.

There are some wonderful plot developments in this highly original novel. The major point that caught my attention is the detail and care taken in the portrayal of the characters as they got used to the change in their sex and their interaction with the other characters. The authors have done a marvelous job in their characters and in the creation of this novel. It does have a mature theme due to sexual content, but after all, this is called THE SEX GATES.
